Local food franchise company Kebab Turki Baba Rafi is set to open in Kolkata, India, in June, kompas.com reported.
Founded in Surabaya, East Java, in 2003, the franchise is known for its Indonesian-style Turkish kebabs.
Prior to India, the company has also opened outlets in several countries, namely Malaysia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Brunei Darussalam, China and the Netherlands.
In a statement received by The Jakarta Post, the company’s CEO Hendy Setiono said “Baba Rafi has been operating for more than 15 years and we have continuously expanded our business by prioritizing a profitable, affordable and innovative system.”
In regard to the company’s expansion to India, Hendy said India and Indonesia shared similarities in food flavors. Moreover, the country’s huge population was considered a potential market for business development.
Hendy said he chose the franchise system as he wanted Kebab Turki Baba Rafi to contribute to the growth of entrepreneurship in Indonesia. According to the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Ministry, franchise is one of the most effective ways to increase Indonesia’s entrepreneurial ratio.
“It is time for local entrepreneurs who have managed to expand their businesses to support Indonesia’s young entrepreneurs and SMEs,” added Hendy.
