Ever since Carrie and Miranda in Sex and the City bit into those pink frosted cupcakes, Magnolia Bakery has become a pop culture phenomenon. Founded in New York city in 1996, the chain has expanded to other locations in the US as well as international locations such as UAE, Jordan and Korea. And now Bengaluru will get its very own outlet, the first in India, which is set to open in Indiranagar in early November.
The franchise comes to the country courtesy of Zonu Reddy and Nischay Jayshankar, partners at Spago Foods. They say, “As a brand, Magnolia always has a standard offering. Of course, each region offers a range of products that work best for that particular market. We have a wide selection of products from cupcakes and cheesecakes to icebox bars and of course, our most famous banana pudding. We are also working on a couple of products that champion local ingredients and flavour profiles apart from the ones from the US.”
As for what made them decide to bring Magnolia Bakery to India and particularly Bengaluru, the couple says “India is a booming market and the timing is just perfect! We loved the fact that the products are baked fresh everyday on site, in small batches. Bengaluru has a well-travelled population and there is no other bakery in the city specialising in purely American desserts. Also, we will change the products we have on offer every month based on seasonality of ingredients. We will rotate our speciality cupcakes, cakes and banana pudding.”
